The Role of an NDIS Psychologist
NDIS psychologist Sunshine Coast can fund a variety of support services to help people with disability manage and live better. Some of these include specialised mental health services, which aim to improve someone’s quality of life by addressing their mental health needs. This includes counselling, and other types of psychological support such as cognitive or functional assessments. The NDIS also funds some behaviour supports which are designed to address behavioural needs such as difficulty with attention and concentration, aggression or self-harm.
In addition, the NDIS can fund community based rehabilitation, which provides support and training to help people with disability participate in the community and daily activities. This can help reduce isolation, increase confidence and independence, and improve a person’s social and work participation. Some of the most common community based rehabilitation supports are personal care and specialised equipment, as well as home modification, community access and peer support.
Psychologists play a key role in the NDIS, and their skills are essential to ensuring a person gets the right type of support to achieve their goals. They provide guidance and therapeutic support to enable people to better handle their hardships and difficulties, as well as assisting them in learning how to recognise, accept and manage problematic emotions or behaviours.
NDIS participants can use their Capacity Building Budget to access psychology, and this is a service available at MindCare Mental Health Services. We have psychologists in Craigieburn, Thomastown and Epping, and they are able to work with you at your home to meet your individual needs.
We can work with you to develop and implement individualised, strengths based and outcomes focused positive behaviour support plans with you. This includes developing individualised behaviour strategies with you, your support networks and other relevant stakeholders. We can also review existing behaviour supports and identify areas for improvement.
In addition to this, we can assist you with your NDIS planning process, by providing a range of support coordination services. These include helping you plan your support services, liaising with your providers and attending meetings on your behalf. This can be done with Plan Managed, Agency managed or self-managed funding.
We also work closely with other professionals to deliver the best possible service for our clients. For example, we can refer you to a neuropsychologist or occupational therapist to complete your assessments and therapy goals. We can also recommend other specialists if we believe they are the most appropriate for you.
